ABOUT TOEFL

TOEFL TYPES

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test is required if you want to study or work in English-speaking countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia. TOEFL score is accepted in more than 6,000 universities/institutions across the world.

The TOEFL covers speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. The latest version of the test is the Internet Based TOEFL (iBT) that is used by most centers. But Paper-based and computer-based TOEFL tests are still available.

TOEFL VERSIONS :

I.Paper-Based

Media : paper ( for problems and answer sheet )

time : 2,5 hours

format :

* Listening Comprehension ( 30 minutes )

Part A : Short dialog ( 20 problems )

Part B : Longer talk ( 15 problems )

Part C : Mini-lectures ( 15 problems )

* Structure & written expressions ( 25 minutes )

Part A : Sentence completion ( completing sentences )
Part B : Error identification

* Reading Comprehension ( 55 minutes )

50 questions for 5 reading passages

* Writing ( 3 minutes )

Write an essay about a given topic

II. Computer-Based TOEFL

The computer based TOEFL (CBT) was introduced in 1998. The format is more or less the same as the original paper-based test. Tutorials which show them how to answer the questions properly are given before the test begins. The CBT has more ‘types’ of questions and it takes longer than the paper-based ( it will last for about 4 hours including the tutorial).

CBT format :

* Adaptive listening (60 minutes)

short dialogues, conversations, academic discussions and mini-lectures.

* Adaptive structure (15-20 minutes)

-sentence completion (approximately 10 questions)

- error identification (approximately 15 questions).

* Reading comprehension (70-90 minutes)

60 questions for about 6 reading passages.

Writing (30 minutes)


III. INTERNET-BASED ( IBT )

This version is the latest and take the longest time ( for about 5 hours ). It has many types of problems, with the focus on academic skills.
